Is KFC gluten free? Now most of you right now might be laughing at that question and are saying of course not! Why would it be? It’s fried chicken which is made with regular wheat flour. They have never advertised as such so it is an easy answer. However, more and more restaurants are providing gluten free alternatives. More and more people are searching for non gluten options. So has KFC made any alternatives for gluten sufferers?
Is KFC Gluten Free? No
Sadly, KFC’s famous fried chicken is NOT gluten free. If you look at KFC’s website and look under “Allergens and Sensitivity”, it will show pretty much all their menu items have wheat and gluten in them. The only things that do not are their dipping sauces and maybe a sundae. That’s it. The website also has a disclaimer which says in part:
“Customers with allergies and allergy-related questions can contact the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network on the web at www.foodallergy.org or by phone at (800) 929-4040. In some restaurants French fries and pork products may be prepared in the same oil. If you or a customer has a food allergy, please be aware that KFC products may have come into contact with possible allergens. KFC is a restaurant environment, serving foods that are not in sealed packages. Therefore, we unfortunately cannot guarantee a 100% allergy-free environment”
This means the risk of cross contamination is high as the kitchen is open.
Conclusion
KFC – Kentucky Fried Chicken – is not gluten free. The vast majority of their items contain wheat and/or gluten. Also, there is a high risk of cross contamination. Anyone with gluten allergies, sensitivities or are Celiac should not eat here. You would be asking for trouble. Instead, look for another restaurant that has gluten free alternatives and eat there. If you really desire fried chicken, perhaps look for an online gluten free recipe or look for a gluten free mix and make your own fried chicken. It might be a bit more work but you will satisfy your craving and your body will thank you for it!
