A simple question, but one that we need to answer for you right away – and that is: Is tofu gluten free? Tofu is a pressed soybean product that vegetarians and vegans have loved for decades. It is packed full of plant-based protein, something so healthy for us, and necessary to keep our muscles strong and healthy.

Yes, tofu is gluten free! The ingredients in tofu are super simple: generally soybeans, water and a coagulant agent, which basically is what keeps the tofu together.
You can check the package of tofu to ensure that it says Gluten Free on it. That certification will provide you the information you need to know – specifically, that the tofu was NOT made somewhere that cross-contamination can be an issue.
Is tofu vegetarian? Is it vegan?
Yes is the answer to both of these questions! Tofu is vegetarian, because it doesn’t contain any sort of meat products. And it is vegan because it doesn’t contain any sort of animal products at all, including dairy or eggs.

Why should I cook with extra-firm tofu?
I like choosing extra firm tofu to cook with, as it is the type that stays together even when being cooked. I use it to replace meat in all sorts of traditional dishes – ones that call for cubes of chicken, for example. You can also bake tofu and then use that to top salads, etc.
Other types of tofu – such as soft tofu – are better used in smoothies or desserts, as the super soft consistency will NOT hold up to being sauteed, fried or even baked.
Are all types of tofu gluten free?
No! Be sure to find a tofu that has basic ingredients we already mentioned above: soybeans and water. Tofu that has added flavours can possibly contain gluten, so be careful to read the label. Ideally, your tofu should say GLUTEN FREE right on the package.
Is tofu dairy free? Is it lactose free?
Yes to both! Tofu is dairy free, because it contains nothing but soybeans, water and some sort of thickening agent. And it’s lactose free naturally, since it doesn’t contain any milk or dairy. Soybeans are the main ingredient of tofu, and soybeans are naturally dairy free and lactose free. And they’re vegan too, of course!
