You want to snack on some hummus, and so you need to know if it is or isn’t gluten free.
Good news! Hummus is almost always gluten free! That’s simply because hummus is made mostly from ingredients like: chickpeas (which are naturally gluten free), tahini (sesame seed paste/butter – also gluten free naturally), garlic, lemon juice and olive oil.
Just be careful to check the package of the type of hummus you’re buying. It’s always best if it is certified gluten free and has a clear GF label on it showing that to be true. The only cases where gluten might be present in a container of hummus might not be gluten free is if it contains other seasonings that have gluten in them.
If your hummus is gluten free, well, then you’ve found a delicious dip or condiment to use in so many ways! It’s delicious smeared on crackers, toast or bagels. Or, it makes a savoury dip for all sorts of sliced or chopped fresh vegetables.
It’s a great condiment that is also vegan – perfect for on a burger bun or a sandwich in place of mayo. It’ll add that creamy texture that is so nice on a burger or sandwich, without it containing animal products!
And I love using hummus as a pasta topper – I just cook pasta (regular or chickpea or lentil pasta) and then make a sauce with hummus, and a bit of the cooking water the pasta cooked in. Add seasonings and herbs and you have a delicious hummus pasta that is super satisfying.
Is hummus dairy free?
Yes! Regular hummus should never contain dairy products. It is made with crushed chickpeas, lemon, garlic and olive oil at its most basic (and delicious, if you ask me!)
Is hummus vegetarian? Is it vegan?
Yes to both! There are no animal products contained in regular hummus, making it a perfect choice for vegans and vegetarians.
