Yum…first we tackled mashed potatoes the other day, researching whether or not they were gluten free or not. And now – the natural match for mashed potatoes: gravy! Today’s question is: “Is gravy gluten free?” So, that is exactly what we will find out today. It is another mouthwateringly delicious assignment!
Does homemade chicken gravy have gluten? How about beef or turkey gravy recipes?
Traditionally, gravy is a delicious, thick sauce made from the drippings from roasted meat. So, typically chicken or turkey gravy is made once you’ve roasted the bird. And, beef gravy is usually made with drippings from a beef roast.
Please be very cautious before consuming any homemade gravy! The most popular recipes usually include wheat flour (also known as all purpose flour) as the thickening agent. And that is absolutely not safe for you to eat if you are Celiac, or have a gluten intolerance or allergy.
But, gravy recipes can be made using cornstarch instead. We wrote all about cornstarch in this article. Using cornstarch (being sure that it’s a gluten free cornstarch) can create delicious, thickened gravies and sauces without having to use flour.
Gluten free Gravy mixes
On the other hand, you can always buy certified gluten free gravy mixes. These usually come in a variety of flavors – such as turkey, beef or chicken, or onion or mushroom gravy for vegetarians. These are absolutely your safest bet! In fact, I know one friend who eats gluten free for medical reasons, and she always ALWAYS keeps a stock of these gluten free gravies in her pantry. Then, she can whip up gravy to top their dinner whenever they feel like it. And, of course there are no worries about gluten.
In Canada, the most popular gluten free gravy mixes are…
Trumpets, please! These are the exact ones my friend likes to stock up on when they’re on sale. Club House gluten free gravy mixes are available on Amazon in both chicken and beef flavours. At the time of writing, these packets both cost under $1.50 each to purchase, so a cheap stock up price, for sure. You can also find the Club House mixes at your local grocery stores, of course.
Or, if you are serving turkey and have a vegetarian coming to dinner, there is this vegetarian turkey gravy option.
In the US, these are some gluten free gravy mixes to try:
Pioneer brand has a gluten free country gravy mix. I believe that is the thick white gravy that is used on top of biscuits, especially in the Southern states. And it gets a whopping 5 star rating, so that’s pretty impressive. And McCormick has both turkey and beef gravy, available in a multi-pack where you get some of each to stock up your pantry.
If you’re at the supermarket, looking for gluten free gravy mixes – make sure to choose one that actually is labelled gluten free. That is the safest way to make sure you are not ingesting any gluten.
