Welcome to Calgary, and to gluten freedom with its many gluten free restaurants! Today we are searching for the most delightful eating spots – and all ones that are determined to safely feed the Celiacs and gluten intolerant among us. Calgary is my home, so some of today’s finds are ones I have personally eaten at and can highly recommend. There are some truly unique dining spots among today’s options – I hope you try them, and enjoy!
Heaven Gluten Free Restaurant & Bar – Gluten Free Restaurants Calgary
Want a little taste of heaven? No, I’m serious! This aptly named Venezuelan eatery located at #119 – 1013 17 Avenue Southwest is a bright spot for anyone to eat at, not just Celiacs! The friendly, glowing yellow decor is matched perfectly by the warm and welcoming staff. (The service here was so good – you feel like family as soon as you walk in. And it is a family-run joint after all, so feeling part of the gang is very comforting!)
We ate the arepas, a Venezuelan soft corn-flour bun, which is stuffed with all sorts of scrumptious fillings. I had the Chicken and Avocado and it was utterly divine, made extra creamy with the generous amounts of house-made guacamole. (I seriously am craving one right now, just remembering how luscious it was!) My husband had one of the pulled pork arepas, and raved at how good it was, and how perfectly seasoned. But, there are also tacos, and deep fried plaintains (wonderful!!). They also serve a popular GF Venezuelan breakfast which they claim is the BEST way to start off a weekend. After eating their food, I seriously trust their opinion. Ideal for: From breakfast to dinner and everything in between. The combination of incredible food and equally amazing service will win you over.
The Village Flatbread Company – Gluten Free Restaurants Calgary
This funky find is 100% gluten free AND Halal. They offer healthful salads loaded with fresh, crunchy and satisfyingly natural ingredients. And the flatbreads their eatery is named after is offered in a wide range of varieties including vegetarian or meaty. (All sorts of creative combinations, named for neighborhoods in Calgary.) Plus, dairy-free mozzarella is offered on meat pizzas at no extra charge! Great if you’re also lactose intolerant. The reviews on this hotspot are consistently high. Ideal for: A pizza craving satisfied – and one that won’t leave you feeling ill!
Bolsa Vietnamese Restaurant, Calgary, AB
Ahhh, Bolsa. Anyone who ever visits this little gem, tucked away in Macleod Plaza (180 94 Avenue SE to be exact) will never forget the experience. The owner of the restaurant is also the hostess, and she is incredibly warm and welcoming. Again – you feel like family when you walk through the door. Visit often, and she’ll ask about your family! But it’s the food we’re also here to discuss – and this authentic Vietnamese eatery does everything just right. From gorgeous, richly flavoured pho to fresh spring rolls with plenty of peanut dipping sauce, it is a delight for the senses. You will want to return. (Not a dedicated gluten free restaurant, so make sure to let her know of your gluten intolerance.) Ideal for: A delicious, casual dinner out with friends. You’ll feel pampered by the hostess.
